It was three oâclock when Callaghan was shown into Chief Detective-Inspector Gringallâs room at Scotland Yard.
Gringall said: âHello, Slim. Iâm glad to see you. Whatâs the trouble?â
Callaghan said: âItâs about this Giles murder. Miss Allardyceâthe woman who was going to marry himâhas been to see me. Sheâs got an idea that youâre after the wrong man. Sheâs got an idea that youâre going to arrest this fellow Strangeways. She doesnât like it a bit. Sheâs certain that Strangeways would never have killed Giles in a million years. She thinks one of his previous lady friends did it.â
Gringall said: âIs that so? I donât agree. She believes Strangeways killed Giles.â He looked at Callaghan and smiled. âPossibly she hasnât told you the whole truth,â he said. âSometimes they donât, you know.â
Callaghan said: âAll right. So she didnât tell me the whole truth. You tell meâwhy does she think that Strangeways killed Gilesâas youâre so certain on that point?â
Gringall said: âGiles was killed on the afternoon of the day before yesterdayâTuesday afternoon. Apparently, on the day before thatâon the MondayâStrangeways got into touch with Miss Allardyce and asked her for Gilesâ address. She says she gave it to him, and then was sorry afterwards.â
Callaghan nodded. He said. âThatâs right. Thatâs what she told me.â
âAnd thereâs something else that apparently she didnât tell you,â said Gringall. âShe immediately sat down and wrote Giles a letter. She didnât like the idea of this interview between these two men at all. In her letter she told Giles that Strangeways was coming to see him the next day. She asked Giles not to see him. She said there would only be trouble, that Strangeways was in a hell of a temper and hated the very mention of Gilesâ name.â
Callaghan said: âThatâs not so good. You found the letter?â
âThatâs right,â said Gringall. âWe found it in pieces in the wastepaper basket in Gilesâ flat. I had âem pasted together. Perhaps youâd like to read it.â
He laid the pasted up letter and envelope on the desk in front of Callaghan. He said: âIt looks pretty bad for Strangeways, doesnât it? He was the last person to see Giles alive. Iâm sorry about your client, Slim, but I think to-morrow weâll probably have to pull him in.â
Callaghan said: âWell I canât stop you.â He glanced at the pasted up envelope in front of him. He said: âIâve got Gilesâ address from this envelope I suppose youâve no objection to my going and looking round the flat?â
Gringall said: âCertainly not. Thereâs no reason why you shouldnât. Iâll call through the porter downstairs and tell him itâs O.K.â
Callaghan said: âDonât do thatâif you donât mind, Gringall. I want to try something.â
Gringall shrugged his shoulders. âJust as you like, Slim,â he said.
